What is the best ratio for paint sprayer? ›

You can use turpentine, white spirit or paint thinners to thin down oil-based paints for use in a spray gun. The best ratio for oil-based paints is 3/1. That's three parts paint and one part thinners. Oil-based paints vary quite a bit; not all of them can be thinned and used in an air sprayer.

The sprayer requires:

Most companies identify their flat-fan nozzles with a four or five digit number (Figure 2). The first numbers are the spray angle and the other numbers signify the discharge rate at rated pressure. For example, an 8005 has an 80 degree spray angle and will apply 0.5 gallons per minute (GPM) at rated pressure of 40 psi.

15 to 20 psi:Airbrushing, touch-up, shading, sunbursting, and thin finish materials. 20 to 25 psi:Soft, velvet-like coverage, with lacquers in particular. 35 to 45 psi:Average spraying range for sealing and topcoating. 50 psi: waterbase lacquers may need this much pressure.

Spraying Paint

One gallon of paint will cover about 150 to 200 square feet of wall. It's best to estimate high when spraying on paint. Spraying uses more paint because the sprayer atomizes the paint into tiny droplets. Most of the droplets end up on the surface, but many others drift away.

The fan width determines how wide of a pattern the gun will provide at about a 12 inch distance from your target. If you have excessive overspray check the size of your fan width. If the fan width is large but your target is not you will spray a lot of paint into the air as a result.

The number of coats you need when using an airless sprayer can vary depending on the type of paint you're using, the surface you're painting, and the desired finish. However, in general, you can expect to apply 2-3 coats when using an airless sprayer.

If the spray fans out evenly, the paint likely doesn't need thinning. If it sputters or leaves thick globs, it needs water to thin it. The best way to thin water-based latex paint is by adding water.

In general the thicker the viscosity of the paint, the larger the fluid tip size needs to be. Spray guns with 0.5mm to 1.2mm are generally used for spot repair/touch up work. Fluid tip of 1.3mm to 1.6mm are used for general body shop spraying on car panel and 1.8mm sizes and above will spray most automotive primers.

I would recommend a few things if you are considering leaving paint in your sprayer. But don't do this for prolonged periods as you could damage your machine and warranty. But overnight or a few hours will be fine.

For example, a 517 tip will spray at 10 inches wide, a 417 tip will spray at 8 inches wide and a 317 tip will spray at 6 inches wide. These calculations for the spray width are based on the gun being held 12” inches from the surface being sprayed.

Airless Spray Tips

For example, a 515 tip will give you a spray fan pattern 10 inches wide (2 x 5) when the sprayer is approximately 12 inches (30 cms) from the surface. A 315 tip will produce a 6-inch wide spray fan, a 413 tip will produce an 8 inch and so on.
